Feel free to expand on the answer to #4 in comments. And yes, there are "wrong" answers to all of these questions, not just #2. One of the wrong answers to #3 is clearly marked. :-)
Assuming you have heard of Bikini Kill, you're familiar with Hanna indirectly, and Le Tigre is her more recent (and very different) band.
The Beastles is a mashup of Beatles songs and Beastie Boy songs, my favorite of which is "Tripper Trouble," a nice use of one of the Fab Four's best guitar riffs over the BB's "Triple Trourble."
The Grey Album is DJ Danger Mouse's mix of Jay Z's The Black Album with the The Album, and is probably the single most driving force in mashups gaining mainstream recognition.
Intergalactic Friends is a damned fine mashup of "We Used to Be Friends," by the Dandy Warhols, and "Intergalactic," by the Beastie Boys.
Actually, I enjoyed that one, too, even though they totally butchered the original story. Disney butchering a classic story isn't anything new to me, so I was able to enjoy it.
I particularly enjoyed the score, actually. More songs than usual struck me as exceptionally well-done in Hunchback than in others. (Not all of them, but more than usual for a Disney flick.)
No, I really liked Hunchback. So you're not alone.
If you ignore the book (and at times sit there thinking things like 'LA, LA, LA. WHAT BOOK? I CAN'T HEAR YOU!') it's actually pretty good, but in no way resembling a children's movie.
I should note that my favorite "mash-up" ever is a Grammy-award-winning track from 1968. I have it on Golden Throats IV: Celebrities Butcher the Beatles. It's called "Mission Impossible/Norwegian Wood." Yes, it combines both those songs, and re-records it with a vocal group. It must be heard to be believed, and you can hear it with Real Audio.
Quirkiness = appeal behind mash-ups (for me anyway). This would be why I like the one I recommended. It's entertaining in a head-scratching sort of way :)
I'm posting to expand on #4 and give some props to some notable related materials.
The KLF used a lot of mixed melodies in their body of work, but my favorite by far was Doctorin' the Tardis, which they released as the Timelords. It combined the Gary Glitter arena anthem Rock and Roll with the theme from Dr. Who.
My runner up is probably the Orbital's live version of Halcyon and On which worked both Bon Jovi's You Give Love A Bad Name and Belinda Carlisle's Heaven is a Place on Earth into the mix. I'm not sure that this technically qualifies as a mash-up since the songs were mixed together unaltered.
If I were to recommend one band to fans of mashups, it would be Negativland. They started doing tape cut-ups when there was actual cutting and splicing of tape involved. I would also recommend dictionaraoke.org (http://www.dictionaraoke.org/).

Date: 2005-11-03 07:34 pm (UTC)Some terms that mean absolutely nothing to me:
"Kathleen Hanna," "Le Tigre," "Beastles, Grey Album, or Intergalactic Friends," and all three of MC Chris's roles. Also, MC Chris.

Date: 2005-11-03 07:47 pm (UTC)Beastles: Beatles/Beastie Boys mashups. (Mashup: A song made by mixing two or more songs together)
The Grey Album: One of the first (if not the first) mashup albums.
Intergalactic Friends: Beastie Boys/Dandy Warhols mashup.
