[livejournal.com profile] robyn_ma tagged me for this meme:

List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying now. Post these instructions in your Livejournal along with your seven songs. Then tag seven other people to see what they're listening to...

I'll do the first part of it (because it's been a year or two since I last memed), but no tagging. You want to post your own, go ahead.

Seven songs getting lots of play on my iTunes:

1. American Idiot, Green Day -- Simply the best rock song of the decade, and one of the best under-three-minute songs ever. Witty, angry lyrics, great drums, and an absolutely infectious guitar riff. I don't think I've gone more than a day or two over the last year without listening to this.

2. Possession, Sarah McLachlan. Still her best song, off the one album she'll never be able to top.

3. Tripper Trouble, The Beastles -- possibly my favorite mashup. Take the rap of "Triple Trouble" and lay it over that amazing riff from "Day Tripper," and you've got a mashup that's actually better than the component songs.

4. Little Babies, Sleater-Kinney. Sure, they've done better songs (Entertain is still the song of the year, imho), but this is one of the catchiest ones, and it's one of two S-K songs (You're No Rock 'n' Roll Fun being the other) that gets played regularly. And this meme is about what I'm listening to right now, not for posterity.

5. The Hot Rocks Polka, Weird Al. Al's Polkas, combining numerous other songs, are always amongst my favorites. This one is the only Polka devoted entirely to one musical group, The Rolling Stones. It's hysterical, but it often slips through the cracks since it was on the soundtrack for UHF, not one of his regular studio albums.

6. Marlene on the Wall, Suzanna Vega. There's pretty much always a Suzanne Vega song on my "what I'm listening to" list. It's usually No Cheap Thrill or Caramel, but this is an early favorite of mine.

7. Boyfriend, Ashlee Simpson. Yes, I feel shame. Lots of it. But holy shit, that guitar lick at the beginning (and which gets repeated throughout) is good. And I'm a sucker for raspy female rock voices, which Ashlee (or whoever she lip-syncs to) has in spades. Pure cheese, but fun.

Anyway, consider yourself tagged if you want to be.

Dude, I love Tripper Trouble. It's a bench mark for mashups, indeed it is. As for American Idiot, it's not my favorite song on that alblum, but I concur in substance.

American Idiot is great. It is even better when you consider that, in my opinion, Green Day's only other even palatable album is Dookie. How the hell did they come up with, apparently out of the blue, this great rock opera thing that touches intelligently and meaningfully on religion and politics? It blows the mind.

I "only" have three versions of that song: the original studio version, the Prince's Trust 10th Anniversary live version, and one off of Live from the River Music Hall, Vol. 3.

Lessee....

The Luckiest - Ben Folds (Five?) It's on a mix that I'm making for Jason and the piano is just... oh gods, it's just fantastic. One of the most beautiful love songs I've ever heard. I'll make you a copy of it for Arisia and you will love it too, damnit.

Going Away To College - Blink182 This has been coming up a lot on my iTunes for no particular reason. I like the song, it's infectious.

Mr Knowitall - Primus Probably my favourite primus song. The first couple lines are just good to be stompy to.

Happy Phantom - Tori Amos Your wife. I blame her.

I only have 4. These are my 4 currents.

There's also "Bohemian Polka", but it's not a polka medley.
