Why was the weekend wonderful?

1. Elayna had her school spelling bee on Friday (where she made the final round and finished fifth), followed by the county math competition on Saturday (where she didn't make the top 25, but still had fun, which is really the whole point of the competition). I helped proctor and grade the math competition -- ended up with a room full of second graders, which was interesting, as they were all very easily distracted. It was fascinating to see the degrees of variation -- in the third round (a speed round of 150 questions in five minutes), scores ranged from 32 to 148. And proctors got free pizza and doughnuts! Woot!

2. We finally had our Anniversary Dinner (only a month+ after the actual date), as Elayna was at a Girl Scout Lock-in at the Y. We went to Floataway Cafe, which was, as always, just unbelievably good. We started with a cheese tray (goat milk cheese from Spain, sheep milk cheese from Italy, and cow milk cheese from GA), then I had yummy gnocchi with braised rabbit while [livejournal.com profile] shadesong ate mushroom ravioli. We followed that up with their amazing coffee and a warm chocolate tart (for [livejournal.com profile] shadesong and a gingerbread cake with lemon and chantilly cream (for me). Yum. Just a wonderful, relaxing night at an adult restaurant.

3. We saw The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe this weekend, and loved it. It wasn't perfect (Narnia's tourism slogan must be "the land in which no one ever sheds blood or gets hypothermia"), but it was damned close. The cast, especially James McAvoy as Mr. Tumnus, was damned fine.

4. The Jets won! By a lot! And Brooks Bollinger ran for more yards than Lamont Jordan! Ha!

Wait, second graders doing math? That's dedication. And I'm glad to see you help proctor. Also, when she gets to junior high, encourage her to do Math COUNTS. Even if she's not great at it, they will drill algebra and geometry into her head, which is VERY useful for those college entrance exams like the ACT and SAT. I made near perfects on the quantitative sections...in the tenth grade. Thank you Math COUNTS.

I only mention that because you and [livejournal.com profile] shadesong seem to be involved in your daughter's life and encourage her to do things for the challenge and fun of it. :)

Oh, and boo yah the Steelers kicked the Bears but this weekend! Too bad my fantasy team is going to lose in the first round of the playoffs if Crumpler doesn't have a big game, and that's assuming Dunn doesn't score a TD.

She digs algebra already. "It's so easy. You just do the problem backward."

Your daughter understands that as a second grader?!? Holy crap! That's better than twenty percent of junior high/middle schoolers. No, I'm not kidding because I just recently decided to stay an extra year at school to get my alternative certification to teach history at the high school level.

Oh. I am still amazed, though, so you still should be a proud poppa. :)

Noooo, as a fifth grader! Which is still advanced, I think, but not quite so freakishly so. *laugh* [livejournal.com profile] yendi was proctoring second graders, but Elayna's in fifth. She's 10.

I should have realized this fact since you can't be in a spelling bee until you are in the fourth grade. Well your daughter is still ahead of the curve, but not to the point it makes my mind explode. ;)

Hee! Yes. She's verra smart. But not OMG prodigy! Which is good, actually; she'll be better socially adjusted...

That was my only complaint about the movie.

So, in short: Your weekend equalled TeH R0xx0r. (You'll tell us if it also equalled TeH S3xxor, right? ;-)

Congratulations on reaching AND celebrating your first anniversary!

I was very surprised by McAvoy. He managed to portray a character that spends most of his screen time hanging out with little kids sans shirt and still avoided seeming like an icky pedophile. Huzzah for him!

I am tentatively hoping for a Prince Caspian movie, mostly for the sake of a CGI Reepicheep.
