It's really sad that most people seem to be drooling over the new Scott Adams blog (which, as far as I can tell, is the first blog to truly master the art of pre-trolling -- basically creating posts that are as full of it as the typical troll post, but located in a central blog, instead of in comments), when the best new blog of the year (and I'd be lying if I'd pretended to spot 'em all) is Jeff Jarvis's Buzz Machine. Jarvis is the TV critic and writer who founded Entertainment Weekly, and he's got a sharp eye for political and cultural issues. He's also a damned fine writer. Highly recommended.

Runners-up would have to include Deadspin for Sports gossip (because sometimes, wallowing in it is fun) and Slashfood for some of the best damned food posts out there. Both prove that a corporate-run blog doesn't have to suck.

All of those can be found syndicated into LJ, but I've found that, between RSS issues and time-on-LJ issues, that I prefer actually visiting my non-LJ blogs directly.

ETA: As [livejournal.com profile] laurel notes in the comments, it's not new. It just only started using Wordpress this year, and I assumed that the archives covered the entire history. Still, you should read it. :-)

I haven't read the others, but [livejournal.com profile] buzzmachine seems to be the RSS feed for Jeff Jarvis's blog.

You realize, of course, that Buzz Machine has been around for a while (it isn't new this year-- just new to you).
