Anyone who's interested in seeing an advance screening of Hoot (and that's a group that should include everyone, as it's produced by Walden Media, based on a damned fine young adult novel by Carl Hiaasen (who damned well deserves a good cinematic adaptation of one of his novels, dammit), and features both Jimmy Buffett and the janitor from Scrubs in supporting roles), should click here, as there's an advance screening in just about every city but Atlanta on April 29.

Hey, Striptease was almost a good movie. It was certainly well cast -- Robert Patrick, Armand Assante, Burt Reynolds, and especially the magnificent Ving Rhames were perfect (heck, I still hear Assante's voice whenever I read any book with that cop in it), and Demi Moore wasn't that bad, either. The biggest problem was that they shied away from the book's real bite.

Hoot might make the transition better, since it's not as over-the-top as Hiaasen's adult books. (I shudder at the thought of how a Hollywood movie would ruin Skink....)

Of course, the hilarious part is that, if you read Hiaasen's Miami Herald column, you a) see exactly where he gets his stories from, to wit, all around him, and b) he tones it down for the fiction. Life in Florida really is that crazy.....
