It was bad enough when Cartoon Network started showing movies like Dumb and Dumber, and Adult Swim aired Saved by the Bell reruns. But now, I turned to the Sci-Fi channel listings for tonight and saw that they're showing three straight episodes of Law and Order: SVU.

Now, I've got nothing against L&A:SVU. It's a perfectly fine show if you want proof that actresses who sucked on Angel also suck on other shows. But, last I checked, in spite of the presence of Richard Belzer (who appeared on the X-Files as the same character), it ain't sci-fi.

If you mean who I think you mean, you've got the wrong L&O.

Not to mention, this is maybe the third or fourth channel that SVU is shown on...I love SVU, but what the hell does it have to do with SciFi?

SciFi's now owned by NBC and SVU must be shown on all NBC channels...

and it continues...

Next, ESPN will start reruns of Webster and Mr. Belevedere because the dads on both are played by (in the case of Bob Uecker alleged) pro athletes...or since they're doing Alex Karras anyway and it features coaches, constant reruns of the Porkys movie franchise...

My understanding is that these channels are testing the waters to see about redefining the brand. It's possible that Sci-Fi may go the way of the birds and become something with a heavy emphasis on science fiction/fantasy, but not so that it so pidgeon-holed.

That's definitely the situation with Cartoon Network, thus the live action movies they've been showing lately.

New stuff...

Well, seeing how they disregard reality and how the criminal legal system actually works on any L& O maybe they assume it could qualify as Sci-Fi?

Well, Sci-Fi shows fantasy, horror and science fiction.

The idea that the NY City police always catch the perp is pure fantasy.

I can't figure out the Cartoon Network move, but Sci-Fi shows horror, and I guess they assumed SVU counts as a horror anthology. They show movies like Se7en and Silence of the Lambs, so why not SVU?

They show movies like Braveheart and The Flintstones, too.

Let's see, The Flintstones must be Sci-Fi and Braveheart...hmmmm...well, they had swords and Conan the Barbarian had swords, so it must fit our network!

Ok, must be the excitement of car buying - I mis-read that as L&O SUV :)

...and that's just another reason why there is less and less I watch on tv at all. If I could get my roomate to drop her use of TIVO I'd ditch my cable entirely..... it ain't worth $70 a month... I get DVDs of anything interesting that's on for less than that.
