We finally rented The 40-Year-Old Virgin, which I'd resisted for ages, because it had the same "oh, this is the best comedy evar!" hype around it that films like Team America and Garden State had (and that's a combined four hours of my life that I'll never get back).

In this case, the hype was justified, as it was a damned-near-perfect mix of sweet and over-the-top humor. Great performances by everyone in the cast, and a sharp script. I suspect that I'm happier having seen it on video than in the theatres, as many of the moments that had us laughing had to include the various scenes that were added (just some of the off-hand comments and moments that slowed the pace of the movie, but were priceless). This has gone on my wishlist, as it's something I do need to own.

(Oh -- and the one scene I would have cut was probably the ending of the scene with Leslie Mann, which was just a little too disgusting for my taste)

And yeah, the songs at the closing credits sequence (something I recall folks raving about when this came out)were brilliant.

'garden state' was terrible beyond words.

Every day I thank my lucky stars that I'm not alone in hating that pretentious ball of bullplop.

The soundtrack, it was utterly spiffy and really was one of the first major releases with an emo sound track. I also liked the story of someone emotionally opening up and realizing they are a man and can't fit in their childish world.

It was very plot challanged but there was much more there than weevil droppings like Punch-Drunk love.

did you watch the deleted scenes? I thought they MADE the movie.

The subtle shift of his personality when it was "waking up" from the meds... that was one little tidbit I liked about it, among other things. Without seeing the deleted scenes, though I doubt I would have liked it as much as I did.

Well, the Freaks and Geeks connection(s) alone made me believe the hype on it, though I still haven't rented it myself. Should do that (or just go on and buy it already).

Since I'm probably never seeing this movie (the lead guy annoys me immensely) what was so disgusting in the scene?

I moderately liked 40 YOV, but for the amount of hype, I was severly underwhelmed.

On the flip side Lady Un loved it, and she usually hates these kinds of movies.
