Mets: Nady and Sanchez
Jul. 31st, 2006 06:08 pmSo I saw the headline first, saying that the Mets had traded Xavier Nady for Roberto Hernandez, and wondered what the fuck they were thinking.
Then I saw the reason behind the trade -- Duaner Sanchez is out for the season thanks to a shoulder injury sustained in a taxi accident (the second taxi accident to affect a Mets pitcher in two years -- Glavine missed a start the year before after one).
Crap.
Sanchez doesn't get much attention, because he's a setup man, but he was probably one of the three most important pitchers on the team. Hernandez is decent, but Sanchez was absolutely amazing this year. Losing him is huge. But if we'd lost him and not made the trade (or if we'd lost him 24 hours later, after the deadline), I'd be even more upset.
I like Nady a lot, but his defense was suspect, and assuming that Endy Chavez gets the job, I'm not overly worried about losing him (although I'd rather have his power and versatility on the team, especially with Floyd's health problems). But finding something to fill the Sanchez gap had to be a priority.
Oh, and I'm not sure why we even bothered getting Oliver Perez in that trade. Maybe we're short a batboy or something.
