Actually, she didn't get screwed over by her publisher. The histrionic hand-wringing in the comments section aside, she got screwed over by a low-level production goon who never informed her editor that the book was being remaindered. This isn't some vast conspiracy to screw Caitlin out of books, this is the incompetence inherent in the bloated bureaucracy of a large multinational corporation.

Fair enough -- I hadn't meant to imply anything conspiratorial (although Liz Williams and Stephen Dedman both sound like they could make some solid complains along those lines), but when you deal with a company, it doesn't tend to matter if the person responsible for screwing you over is at the top or the bottom, or does it out of malice or incompetence (other than for purposes of Caitlin's relationship with her editor).

Which is not an irrelevant concern. It may not seem like it, but the editor was, in her own way, just as screwed as Caitlin....

Oh, possibly more. There's nothing worse than having someone's trust in you undermined by actions out of your control (something that can happen in any industry).

(Of course -- and this is what makes that betrayal even worse for the editor -- there's now that little voice going, "sure, assuming she's telling the truth about that other guy being the one to fuck up")

(Tryin' to keep the sense of humor. Oh, by the way, especially good Shakespeare insult today! When I first read Julius Caesar in high school, I read aloud as the shoemaker who's among those insulted. I actually kind of enjoyed being insulted that way...)
