I'm utterly disgusted with these parents, who have now gotten a good teacher fired because their precious little fucknugget saw a nude sculpture at a museum.

I'm even more disgusted, however, with the spineless principal and school board in the article.

I saw this on my friendsfriends page, and I just wanted to let you know that I absolutely, 100% agree. I posted about this about a week ago with the subject line, "STAY AWAY FROM THE CULTURE, IT HAS A PENIS"

ugh. people like this disgust me.

I agree with you in principle, but I'm most disguested with the parents who didn't turn out to support her. School boards are political bodies, they react and respond to calls etc. from the community. If the reasonable, intelligent parents, who are now "concerned about the program", as it's "the reason they moved here", didn't call, write, or show up to board meetings to support her, then they are as much, if not more to blame than the whackos.

I think you now understand why I am glad I don't live in Texas anymore.

As has been noted - the squeaky parent gets their will done.

Spinelessness is, I'm pretty sure, a requirement for school administrations these days. That it should also be prevalent among parents (most especially those parents who were saying they moved into that area for the art program) is further evidence of the baaaification of America.

This and the other article are completely ridiculous.

I just cannot even say anything but "Arggggh."

Another good reason to have moved from Texas.

If we didn't also have an art teacher with 20+ years of experience, I would invite that woman to make application to our school.

That is some fucked up shit right there. I hope she brings the union in on this, because I have the sneaking suspicion they need a real reason not to give her a job next year. If a teacher is tenured, it's almost impossible to get fired, unless you've committed a serious crime; taking kids on a field trip where they see nekkid statues doesn't qualify, IMGLO.

She may not be able to return to that school--and frankly, why would she want to, if that's how they're going to treat her?--but another school would be foolish not to hire her.

Texas is a 'right to work' state, technically there is a teachers union, but it has no power whatsoever. Because there is no union, there is also no tenure.

I used to have a "contract" that was one page, front and back, all clauses favoring the administration, and often without an actual number on the salary line. Friends of mine that had been teaching there for 20+ years are still only offered 3 year renewals, some districts go 'all the way' to 5 years, but they are rare.

Someone on boingboing wrote a letter to the principal, essentially saying "Shame on you. You're supposed to be an educator. You are failing. What kind of environment are you trying to create for these kids? Shame."

A flunky from the school wrote back, saying "She was a crappy teacher and we were going to fire her anyway. It had nothing to do with the nude statue. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain."

And it took them 28 years to discover she was a crap teacher?????? If that's the case, then the admin team needs firing, big time!

I hate people who do this. If you want to be upset about it and complain, that is fine, but her loosing her job over this? That is rediculous.

This is part of the thing that keeps me from getting my certificate and teaching art in public school.

I keep pointing people who've seen this story over to [livejournal.com profile] ionotter, who actually got lucky - because there's more to the story. Lots more. If you go through the journal, you'll get the details - go check it.
