Thoughts on Daisuke Matsuzaka
Nov. 10th, 2006 11:55 amSo, there a bunch of teams (including my beloved Mets) bidding for the right to negotiate with Daisuke Matsuzaka.
The way the system works, Major League teams post sealed bids to the Japanese club that posts a player, and the winning bid gets exclusive negotiating rights with the player.
Matszuka is supposed to be amazing. He's also likely to be expensive, not least because he's represented by Scott Boras.
The thing is, if the negotiations with the player fall through, the money gets refunded to the Japanese club.
So, if I was a club like, say, the Rangers (rumored to have made a huge bid), I might front the $30 for the negotiating rights, then approach Boras and Matsuzaka like he was a #4 starter. The deal would fail, but it would prevent the Yankees or the Orioles from getting him.
Of course, the Rangers are the team that gave Boras client Alex Rodriguez the largest and silliest contract in sports history, so I suspect they'll overpay here, too.
