Outgoing governor Mitt Romney, who is theoretically a moderate, but who is opposed to gay marriage (because he clearly realized that tapping the Massachusetts homophobe vote was an awesome way to help his party), held yet another rally to try to get marriage to be legally defined as only being between a man and a woman (sort of like Brooke Shields and her Calvins).

Anyway, this picture (from the Boston Herald) makes it perfect clear that the target audience showed up for the speech:

(I'm referring, of course, to the three white pointy "hats" sticking up in the back of the crowd, which I realize are likely tricks of the light, or possibly tears in the flag. But damn, if they don't look like Klansmen).

I still fail to understand how or why homosexual marriage damages or threatens my marriage. The institution can be threatened and cheapened in many ways *cough*BrittneySpears*cough*, but having two people who love one another be able to have their commitment recognized isn't one of them. If necessary, define marriage as something performed by a religious institution and call a civil service something else, but get over it.

The only way Romney is going to get into the White House is if he's an OVEN mitt. Ha. Punny.

I'm with you on that one. Have a legal definition of some kind of something, subject to all the usual rules for divorce and all that other stuff. Maybe call it "fizblibble" or something equally content-neutral, since the perfectly good term "civil union" has been co-opted by hatemongers on both sides of the debate. Once that's established for the act of signing a marriage certi -- sorry, a fizblibble certificate, let the religions call it what they will.

Well, not exactly, but I have seen Klan hoods in the past, and there's no way they're that thin and spindly, or that pure white without shading. My money's on some kind of tearing of the flag, which is just about appropriate in this case...

I believe that the it-threatens-marriage argument is just an excuse made by people who like to say "I have nothing against homosexuals, BUT..." when they would actually be in favour of public stonings, if they thought for a second they could get away with it.

It's yet another case where people believe what they believe, with no real basis, and then try to tack on some kind of justification that they think that more-sane people will be willing to accept.

They're against gay marriage because they're against homosexuality, plain and simple, but they know that they can't get away with that sort of attitude any more, so they try to "pretty it up" and make themselves look reasonable, when in fact many of them are only very slightly removed from Phelps and the people from his Westboro Baptist Church.

If Mitt Romney's a moderate, then I eat children.

Dude, if the flag's torn, and they're still using it for a backdrop? That's actually more disrespectful than if it were Klansmen, unless it's a historic flag or something.

Mitt stopped being a moderate the day after he was elected to the office... he's been a conservative pain ever since.
