Firefly will become an online RPG.

I bet the game rocks, but has all sorts of downtime, and gets shifted to different servers constantly over the span of a few months. Then, just as folks are starting to get into it, it'll be cancelled. Only to be released as a standalone game two years later that has all sorts of plot holes and fucks with everything I liked about the original.

No, I'm not bitter. Why?

I hope Whedon actually has some input to making this feel like something other than a generic space battle with different chrome.

I'm not particularly hopeful that this will ever actually see the light of day, and I'm even less hopeful that it'll be any good. :S

I'm with you up to "just as folks are starting to get into it." FOX didn't cancel it to be mean, they cancelled it because not enough people were watching it and it was obscenely expensive. The ratings dropoff after the first two episodes was tremendous.

Of course, the first two episodes were the execrable "The Train Job" and the mediocre "Bushwacked," the two worst episodes of the show, so it's not surprising that most folks didn't stick around on the off-chance that something good would come.

But people weren't getting into it. That was the problem......

Er, "The Train Job" had neither an opening flashback nor Wash playing with the dinosaurs. Those were both in "Serenity," the pilot episode that FOX didn't show first because they're morons.

I wrote an entire essay in Finding Serenity on this subject, but I suspect that if FOX had actually aired the fucking pilot first, instead of opening with a lame-ass heist story that felt like it was written over a weekend (mainly because it was, in fact, written over a weekend), September 2005 would've been when Firefly's fourth season began, not when Serenity was released to theatres.

Hmmm... How long will it be before someone does the obvious Pratchett Discworld game, with the obvious title? ...
