Stuff from the weekend:

1. Didn't watch the Oscars. I treat the Oscars in much the same way I treat the NCAA or any professional soccer league. regular season: I'll check out the results, and if there's an interesting highlight, I'll watch it, but I'm not about to waste a few hours of my life on it. That said, I'm happy for Scorsese, Whitaker, and Mirran.

2. We introduced Elayna to her first Munchkin game (Munchkin Bites, which is the only one we own) this weekend. She's hooked.

3. They now carry Caribou Coffee at our local Shaw's! Yay! I just had my first cup of Caribou Blend in four months.

4. This just in: Dave Sim is still completely fucking bonkers.

5. TV: Watched Slings and Arrows, The Batman, and Legion of Super-Heroes. All made me happy.

A. I adore Sarah Polley, and she's perfect as a member of the New Burbage festival.

B. Now that Paul Fucking Dini has written a Harley Quinn episode, can people stop bitching about the new show not being Batman: TAS (especially since HQ's origin, silly silver-age name aside, is more believable now?)?

C. The cameos on LSH of the Green Lantern Power Battery and the Helmet of Fate were brilliant. I'm really enjoying what they're doing with Phantom Girl's character -- a nice twist on the Silver Age plotlines involving Colossal Boy. And next week we get Cosmic Boy! Woohoo!

I couldn't even read the Sim bit. You're a stronger man than I.

Heh. Directly after reading Dave Sims' Theory of Disease, I read this.

*sighs* I think we're past the point of "gay man deep in denial is unable to deal with attraction to collaborator, has violent jealous reaction to collaborator's marriage, and writes polemic against women in response" here (which I'll admit was my initial interpretation when #186 came out).

I also find the new origin for Harley less convincing -- it seems more contrived. But then, I hate the animation style of The Batman so much the writing isn't a factor; it's one of only a handful of shows I'm unable to even give a chance to because the art is so nauseating.

Depends which original story. I've only seen the second half of the comics story (from when she meets Ivy) so I can't say there.

In the animated series I always assumed we were talking about reverse transference happening over a long period of intensive therapy. Admittedly it's never stated outright.

I agree about the art. It's really hard to watch sometimes. This version of the Joker is so amazingly irritating and ugly.

And I just didn't like this story. It didn't do a thing for me. The only good thing about this show, in my opinion, is the interaction between Batgirl and Robin. Oh, and the episode where we see Oracle.

I also agree about Harley. I liked the B:TAS story more than this one.

*double-checks*

Not at the moment, no. Sim would probably accuse me of a lot of things, come to think of it.

That theory makes a lot more sense than anything Sim has ever said.

I was hoping he'd get better when Cerebus was over, but it looks like his permanently stuck in the echo chamber of his own head.

WRT #2, I have a full set of Munchkin sets (with the exception of some of the promo cards), so if you want to host a massive all-the-sets slugfest sometime, let me know.

See? See? Canadian writers go batshit over time! You're just confirming what I posted this weekend!

Ah Sim. Has he gone any crazier? I ploughed through every word of Cerebus (yes, even all the weird-ass theological-scientifology in Latter Days), and thus consider myself excused from following anything he's written since.

Munchkin: I've played several games of it with all available cards, as well as a few dice and bookmarks. While unwieldy, it's absolutely fantastic.

Caribou Coffee: I wonder if my Shaw's (Porter Sq) carries it now? If they're not the same Shaw's, and it does, that will be awesome.

Dave Sim: Yep, he's still insane, but I still love Cerebus. That said, I haven't read past volume 13 (mainly due to interest in other things for now).

The new Batman cartoon: I've only seen a few episodes of it, but I couldn't stand it. The writing was okay, but the animation was ugly, at best.

resisting or opposing God just means that every time you express what you think is your own free will it is, in actuality, just the venting of the demon possessing you.

What the fucking fuck?!?

Wow, it was wierd to see a picture of Tim Maroney there. Having his picture above a nutcase rant on demonic possession is so oddly appropriate.

The bit that most struck me? Elizabeth Bardiwill's statement "This whole 'Pariah King' thing? It's over. You've been usurped" and Sim's assumption that she's trying to "completely undo the last twelve years like some weird feminist magic wand". Rather similar to what I see going on in this recent post from Highlander.

I am not liking the new Batman cartoon, that said, I liked this Dini/Harley episode better than others I've seen. I feel that the Robin origin happened too quick in this show.

I don't know, I'm sure it's just because I grew up on B:TAS so I think it's better. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.

I just feel like it's "Ultimate Batman".

Legion of Super Heroes is pretty good, though.
