Wednesday stuff

1. shadesong and I (along with yunatwilight and, for a few minutes, Elayna) got to meet texmorgan last night! Yay! He and his girlfriend were vacationing in Boston, and hit H20Town before heading out. We chatted for a couple of hours and had a great time. Yay for more nifty NYC folks!

2. Elayna spent the evening at a Lemony Snicket party at the library. Pizza was eaten, and she won a handful of Hardy Boys books.

3. Have I mentioned how much I adore our library? They have more books from Cemetery Dance, Subterranean Press, Pyr, Prime, and Nightshade than I've seen at any other library (although, admittedly, the Atlanta libraries are my basis for comparison). As I've said to 'song any number of times, if our local branch were a bookstore, we'd be in the poorhouse.

4. Amazon's posted yet another up-to-50% off sale, this time on movie musicals. This one includes the Rodgers and Hammerstein Collection (as well as the individual movies), West Side Story, All That Jazz, Guys and Dolls, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. It also includes the 1968 edition of The Producers (someone might need to mention to Amazon that it's not, technically, a musical), and, in a move that makes me extremely happy, Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo! Yes, the sequel with the greatest title ever is available for $7.49!

4.5 In our household, we'll add "Electric Boogaloo" to the title of any sequel, if possible.

5. Ever wonder what the odds are of so many spices beginning with the third letter of our alphabet? The good folks at Language Log have worked it out.

I don't know what Watertown specifically has, but I've always been happy with the Minuteman network's selection of SF. Cambridge has generally had a pretty strong collection, in particular, though not all of it is currently accessible due to the Main Library construction and temporary relocation.

In the old Main Library, though, it was fun to go hit the SF stacks; for a while they were quite literally at the far end of the basement, lacking only a "Beware of the Leopard" sign to get the full effect. (Well, okay. The lights and stairs did work.) Now, the SF is still in the far back corner of the stacks...but somehow, having the stacks in an elementary school gymnasium doesn't have the same effect as the old space. (No metal grating floors that are supported by the shelves, for one.)

*nod* Once you add the MM network, it gets incredibly good, but that's usually a matter of my seeking something out. Having all those good books in such a small library hits my impulse control (or lack thereof) hard.

Yeah, I did see that. Had I known, I might have asked you to pick up an extra for me; this one's 8+ years old and not as flexible as it used to be. (Of course, neither am I.)

One of my favorite aspects of the Minuteman/CPL setup is that more than once I've requested a new SF book, and rather than waiting for another library's copy to show up, CPL bought one themselves.

The really fun part about my library card is that it's a dual-use card. I originally got it as a Boston card (which, btw, any Massachusetts resident can get, if you haven't already), and when we moved to Cambridge had it "rehomed" to the CPL. At the time CPL was still part of Metro-Boston Library Network rather than Minuteman, so this was no problem. During the Big Minuteman Move[1], MLN just duplicated the records for patrons of the libraries that were moving. This meant that my bar code became valid in both MBLN and MLN, so I don't have to have two cards or remember two different numbers.

My favorite library network name in Massachusetts is CLAMS (Cape Libraries Automated Materials Sharing).

[1] Back in 1997, a chunk of what had been part of MBLN moved to MLN all at once, including Cambridge.

I definitely don't remember when it came out. I just happened upon it while scanning TV a decade or two ago, and have loved it ever since. I fully blame it for my love of musical cinema. :D

My videocassette was in desperate need of replacement, so thanks again. ;)
