"the RIAA insists on interrogating the child in person"

Insists?
Insists???
She's 10. You don't insist on fuck all, her parent will relay her 'statement' which will probably amount to "I saw this song online and I liked it". I don't care who you represent, how big the organization, or how legitimate you think your beef is, there will be no grilling of little children.
Self important cocksuckers.

Dude, read the rest, it wasn't even her, it was some guy in Washington. They're just pissed because the parent wouldn't roll over and pay them anyway.

You're right. I was considering leaving it at that, then thought I could give them the benefit of the doubt.

Send me to the gulags.

Please let "Weird Al" Yankovic score ten million points for style by donating to their defense or something. (He's already spoken out on their behalf, or I should say "sung out"...) That would be nice, and stick it more thoroughly to the R-I-double-A!

We put the lotion on our skin. We do this whenever we're told.

Now now, [livejournal.com profile] yendi, you know that the RIAA is only going after hardened criminals, those too evil to be allowed to continue on in a polite society. Age is just a number. If she were 35, and a crack addict, would we care? No. We wouldn't even hear about it. But because it's some silly little 7 (at the time of the infraction) year old, who's now 10, and who didn't even commit the crime in question, we get a bogus news story about it. What's her defense? "It wasn't me" ? Come on, we all know that won't hold up in court. In the Court of Public Opinion, you're guilty until proven someone else did it, and whoever strikes first is right.

This kid should be sent to Alcatraz for a life sentence, obviously. Any jury in the world would convict. Especially a jury of her peers.

the slashdot link has more of the legal documents... I really want to see the list of the 1000+ digital music files they supposedly found on their computer. (which it seems doesn't matter if she wasn't at home on the specific day that they were investigating or that it wasn't her screenname but the fact that that false information led them to these 1000+ files that would have taken "months to a year to download" gives them evidence to further prosecute?

um, but that would make sense and totally shred their whole campaign of fear-induction. After all, if they can harrass a 10 year old kid and her disabled mom, then the rest of us criminals will get the message and be rightfully frightened of them.

I could be mistaken but isn't it also possible that those 1000+ files were bought online legally as well before downloading? How could they tell?

you know, the riaa really should learn the difference between 'crime' (which downloading music is *not*) and 'actionable offense.'
