Yeah ... I've been kicking around the military sci-fi circuit lately trying to find something that would stack up well alongside Stirling's "Draka" series, Heinlein's Starship Troopers, Steakley's Armor, Wolverton's On My Way to Paradise, or even the "Slammer" books.
So I've been reading "firsts" lately trying to find something that will hold my interest. Tried out Ringo's "Posleen" series, but it started out tolerable, picked up a bit by book 2, then started turning really dull. Tried E.E. Knight's Way of the Wolf but it just too strange for my tastes. I even went and picked up Haldeman's The Forever War (the author's edition) which I am slogging through just because it's supposed to be a classic. So far, the only ones to hold my interest are Scazi's Old Man's War and Weber's March Upcountry. Both grabbed my attention right away and had plenty of action on the way through. Gotta grab Scalzi's The Ghost Brigades when it comes out on May 1st ... and will pick up March to the Sea then too.
I have got to do something until Stirling's A Meeting At Corvalis makes it out in paperback this fall and In the Halls of the Crimson Kings comes out in November.
