Oh dear lord, Tecmo Bowl is returning!

"I can't tell you what platform we're making it for. But I can tell you that it's probably not going to be on the platform that you're expecting... if that makes any sense. . . That's one thing I can tell you for sure. This is going to be a brand new game for one of the new systems ... We're confident that the new Tecmo Bowl is going to be the talk of the town in 2008."

Of course, it might well fail to capture the magic of the original, as so many other updates have done. And it's got a good chance of not being released for a system I own anyway. But it's still got a decent chance of being the first football game (other than the PS2 compilation featuring Cyberball 2072) that I've liked in years.

Woo hoo!

I actually played this; my first college dorm played several seasons of that game (1991 version) in 1992-93. (We kept track of the season's scores with a dry-erase board on the door of the room where we played it. Each of us were represented on it by an X-Men character. We were proud geeks!) A couple of times, we commandeered the wall-size TV in a basement screening room to play it (other times we couldn't). One season ended prematurely when power got knocked out by one of the maybe five lightning strikes that struck Eugene in the four years I was there. I was one of the players at that moment. There was a pause. And then there was screaming. The whole season up to that point had been erased, so eventually we shrugged and started over.

Anyway, that was cool (thanks for the excuse to relive that), and the new one could be cool, too.

Oh my, imagine if it goes to the Wii! Can you throw overhand with the Wii? *imagines doing the Quarterback Stance in front of a big-screen TV*

Complete random guess from someone completely out-of-the-loop: Wii's Virtual Console, just the original game remade, but with current teams/lineups

Can't happen, unfortunately. EA Sports signed an exclusive deal with both the NFL and the NFLPA for name/logo rights. (The deal expires in 2010, I think.)

Ah, nostalgia

My brother forced me into many hours of Tecmo Bowl when I was little because he was tired of playing the computer.
