Amazon, apparently feeling that eighteen gazillion pre-orders isn't enough, has upped the ante on their Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows deal. Now, if you pre-order it, not only do you get it for $17.99 (49% off) and with guaranteed delivery on July 21, but Amazon will throw in a $5 promotional certificate for August.

Personally, I'm waiting until they up the ante and offer to have Jeff Bezos and J.K. Rowling personally deliver it to you, along with enough coffee from Starbucks to last through the entire book. Just wait; I bet that'll be the next offer.

Thank you. I hadn't preordered this yet and this was just what I needed to decide. (Part of the problem was not knowing what state I would be in that day)

If I hadn't already reserved mine at a bookstore, I might actually be tempted by that offer...

Huh! Maybe I should wait a bit longer and see if they increase the offer...

(I'm a procrastinator -- I haven't even considered ordering it, yet...)

Ooooo! Or an iPhone! (plus a year's service, of course)
(I can dream, can't it?)

Rush Limbaugh is doing a daily sweepstakes for an 8 gig iPhone with two years of the 450 minute plan. All you have to do is subscribe to the free email newsletter to be entered. Nobody says you have to read it after subscribing to it...

Yeah - but I think I'd just feel dirty... (*shutters*)

We're getting ours at the stroke of midnight from the local bookstore, so we'll have it several hours before you do.

We'll need those extra hours, because I don't see the point in buying two brand-new hardcover copies, even though my wife and I are both going to read it. (I'm not sure, but I think we both had it finished within 24 hours last time anyway. I know I did.)

Last time, I read the book for a three or four hours, and then went to sleep. My wife took over, and then when I got up and she went down, I got the book back.

(Richard was much younger then, so we slept in shifts every weekend. We still do, but to a lesser extent.)

I'm going to be at Baitcon that weekend. I wonder if the post office would deliver out to wherever that is being held.

If you get the address where your staying, and give it to Amazon soon enough, I don't see why not. You might want to call the hotel where you're staying (I assume) and ask them if there would be any issues.

We made a last-minute (well, OK, last week) change when we pre-ordered the fifth book, because we went out to visit the in-laws in Ohio that weekend. My wife read most of the book while I drove back.

I think even if you do pre-order now, you'll still get any additional promotions they offer between now and the 21st. They're giving the $5 off coupon to everyone who's already pre-orderd, as well.

I think that's how they do things. Once or twice I've gotten emails from Amazon telling me that, due to a sale or special deal, something I had ordered was going to be cheaper, or upgraded to a quicker delivery at no charge.

THey have to be loss-leading this horribly, I just don't understand why. It's the last book of the series, so lost leading isn't going to net them any future sales from the book. Unless the publisher has done something stupid with their books deals and is going to be eating the cost (again stupid to do with an end of series book).

It's worth noting that if you've already pre-ordered (as I have), you'll get the $17.99 price, and I'm assuming you'll get any additional price drops when and if they happen. Not sure about the $5 cert, though (I may have to de-order and re-order, but logic dictates that at some point they'll run out of stock for pre-orders), and the July 21st shipping is so expensive it makes my butt pucker.

When Amazon first added the Friends functionality to wish lists in the late 90's I friended Bezos and bought him one of the items on his list along with the note "Thanks for giving me a place to spend all my money." You'd think he could return the favor. :)
