TLC has signed a deal to broadcast the Miss America Pageant.

What the fuck? What, exactly, does one learn from the Miss America Pageant?

Seriously. I mean, Nip/Tuck will tell you more about plastic surgery, Ugly Betty will offer better insight into fashion, and House will teach more about anatomy. What, exactly, are people expected to learn here? Or has The Learning Channel gone the way of such "our name is no longer an acronym" terms as "Entertainment and Sports Programming Network" and "Music Television?"

I must quote The Boondocks, when Huey called his cable company: "Hello, I'm watching BET - Black Entertainment Television? There are no black people on it and it's not entertaining."

They're now just "The L Channel".

As in L on their forehead.

It's because pre-packaged stuff that doesn't require them to do original programming or actual effort/research is just easier to get, especially a fluff-filled thing like a beauty contest. Someone else does all the work, they pay a small fee, and the viewers lose a few thousand brain cells as they rake in the dough from the advertisers.

Who needs work, research, etc when you can let some pre-packaging hype artist take all the financial risks?

Reasons why I stopped watching television over a decade ago include....\\

Seriously tho, when you watch TV once in a blue moon like I do, the freeze frame every few years showed that TLC was on the 'lets dumb it down until everyone will watch us' path from the getgo.

Why, they will learn how to binge and purge, to be anorexic, how to wear your swimsuit to best show of your implants, why brazilian waxes are a requirement, and all other kinds of STUPID SHIT.

They could pump the entire college scholarship angle.

Of course, the only thing I watch on TLC is Property Ladder.

I don't have a TV

...but I've seen this downward spiral in the quality of the shows being offered on TLC. Then again I lost interest in most television programming when Tech TV died and G4 screwed its corpse.
