Sergio Leone, cheap!
Aug. 21st, 2007 08:39 amAmazon's Deal of the Day is the Sergio Leone Anthology (featuring the two-disc editions of A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly, and Duck, You Sucker). Eastwood! Coburn! Steiger! Van Cleef! Wallach! $35.99 (60% off)! If you don't own this set, you need to. Really.
There are plenty of great directors of Westerns (Ford, Mann, Hawks, Sturges, Leone, Boetticher, and Peckinpah*). My DVD collection needs more of all of them. So does yours.
*Which is not to dismiss the surprisingly good westerns Fritz Lang put out near the end of his career. Or Daves, whose 3:10 to Yuma didn't need to be remade, although the remake looks above-cromulent. Or Eastwood himself, of course. And yes, there have been plenty of great westerns by other directors (Zimmerman, Huston, Stevens), but I tend to think of them as (successful) dabblers in the genre. And yes, I know Lawrence Kasdan's quote about Billy Wilder. :-)
