The Batman

Yesterday's episode of The Batman made wonderful use of Nightwing. A nice touch.

Also, you can't go wrong with a guest role for Patton Oswalt.

I was a bit confused by the use of Nightwing though. So in "The Batman" universe he's a videogame character? Does that mean that Dick won't become him one day? Or will he decide that he found the name and costume so cool that when choosing a grown up identity he copies directly from someone else's imagination.

The episode was really fun, especially the nanobyte stuff, but yeah...

We've already seen that he will become Nightwing (on the episode set in the future, the one that also established that this universe will have Babs turn into Oracle). And Jerry O'Connell -- who voiced him there -- also voiced the videogame character. I'm guessing that this identity is what will inspire Dick in the future.

The "future" episode with Mr. Freeze totally escaped my memory. So, they've now established that Dick Grayson basically steals his superhero identity from a videogame? Logically, that's just kind of...well, lame, isn't it?

I took the game to be a "City of Heroes"-style game, where Dick has created the character for the game, and will eventually use it as an identity.

Yeah, that's how I figured it, too.

At first, though. I was like, "Wait..Nightwing?? Ow...brain hurts! Oh! A videogame! That's okay then."

I thought that was clever as well! At first I thought, "Wait, if Dick is still young Robin, then who's Nightwing???" And then they pulled back and showed it to be a video game. Very clever.

I read it as Dick having created the Nightwing game character himself, as an idealized version of himself. So it makes sense that persona will feel comfortable to him when he gets older.

Somehow I missed that they said the game had a premise. Your explanation makes sense though, so I'll stick with it. Cause I'd rather not think the writers were being lame.
