They had chosen to oppose the shield before the shield was thrown. In fact, it was the choice that instigated said shield-throwing.

No. In my sentence, it must be "had chosen" because I put the throwing of the shield in the past tense.

You could certainly change "chose" to "have chosen," but it would be a slightly different meaning. Both options are correct.

Well, they don't have to yield. They may choose to. Alternatively, he can just beat them to death.

Besides, if they didn't reveal themselves until after throws his mighty shield, then they probably won't get hit with it. Are we to assume that this is some sort of magic shield that can detect unseen villains?

I consider Brubaker to be a great writer (perfect, in fact, when he was doing Point Blank and Sleeper), and he'd make the phone book well-written. But good dialogue in a bad story (and I'll admit I gave up on even downloading Cap a few months ago) just isn't enough for me.

Writing isn't just the dialogue, it's also the story he's telling. So saying he's a great writer but his story sucks is a bit warped.

But we agree to disagree, either way. I think the story is far from bad.

Normally, I consider him to be a great storyteller, but in the case of Cap, I guess I find that he's really just putting pretty words on a mediocre story (a trend that I've seen too much of from both publishers nowadays). But yeah -- we're clearly reacting differently to the same story.
