I just realized that I've picked up Brenda Leigh Johnson's habit of saying "Thank you so much," when I really mean, "Jesus Fucking Christ, why don't you just do the thing you're fucking supposed to do in the first place?"

All things considered, I suppose it's the more polite thing to do.

It's in the same vein as "Bless your heart..." - one of my favorite Southernisms.

(And I do the same thing with the "Thank you so much". I have to actively try NOT to say it with her intonation.)

I've long thought that being able to make "Thank you so much" sound like "Fuck off and die" is one of the only useful things growing up in the south taught me.

Though muse0fire is right about the lovely and subtle usefulness of "Bless your heart..."

Yes, it is more polite--but spoken correctly there's no doubt in anyone's mind what you really mean. But since your words are sugary sweet and perfectly correct, they can't call you on it. (Or if they do, you can look shocked and surprised by their reaction and play the offended innocent.)
