I've been offline today, and logged in to read the news that Sydney Pollack has died. Dammit.

He hadn't actually directed a film I loved since the '80s (or a film I enjoyed since 1990's Havana), but during the '70s and '80s, man he was good.

He was also fine in front of the camera -- never a scene-stealer, but capable of filling minor roles so nicely, with notable turns in Husbands and Wives, his own Tootsie, and last year's Michael Clayton.

The IMDB claims that he filmed an episode of TCM's upcoming Under the Influence with Elvis Mitchell. I'd planned to watch it anyway, but I suspect it'll be a lot more painful to watch than I'd originally expected.

Dude, I love him even more as an actor. Such a loss. :/

I dunno, for one of the lions of his era, I always just kinda found him adequate at best, as a director.

Still, his onscreen presence helped make some movies I like a lot, and this kind of death is always hard on any good movie geek.

And he just all around always seemed like a pretty good guy.

Sad news....I saw it last night on CNN.

(Side note: I promised 'song a ride to rollerskating last week. Can you remind her to email me at either nyrdgirl (hotmail) or piscusfiche (gmail) so we can exchange info if she still needs the ride? Danke schoen.)
