Very interesting. I can't help but think that the "Best Artistic Quality of Production" was in some ways replaced by the Best Original Screenplay (i.e. the We'd Like to Give You Best Picture But You're Too Original and Groundbreaking, Sorry Pal) award for many years; see everything from Citizen Kane to Pulp Fiction to Lost in Translation. That said, given the number of times Best Picture and Best Director have split the vote in the last decade, the latter may be starting to fit the bill instead, which almost seems appropriate. Thank you for the link!
I've seen both Sunrise and Wings, and I liked Wings more. Sunrise had some exquisite shots in it, but Wings is more fun. Also it has Clara Bow, which doesn't hurt. The writer of that piece insists that Wings is just short of terrible, which tells me pretty much all I need to know about him.
