So, Willie's gone.
Jun. 17th, 2008 10:44 amFrustrated as I am at the state of the Mets, I'm not sure I'm so happy about Randolph's firing.
Mind you, he's certainly had his share of issues this year, and certainly things like a four game sweep by the Padres are hard to take.
The Mets needed to fill the #1, 2, and five spots in the rotation (with the understanding that Pedro was going to be #2 eventually, but was injured). They needed a second baseman and corner outfielders, a catcher, some relievers to replace the ones they were missing last year (Crawford and Bell), and a solid bench. They got the catcher, right fielder, and #1 starter, but that's it. Two of the signees are perpetual DL vets, and no on was surprised to see Alou and Castillo out as often as in this season (note that I like both players, but they're both fragile). The #5 slot in the rotation is still filled by a very shake not-ready-for-prime-time Pelfrey, the bullpen keeps crumbling, and Carlos Delgado keeps aging. None of that's on Willy.
But forget that. Let's assume he did need to go -- if only for the old classic, "the team needs a change."
So they let him go out on a road trip to CA, wait until after he's won his first game, and then fire him an ass-fuck in the morning, when the NY papers can't run with the headline?
That's a heady mix of cowardice and stupidity there. I'm pretty fucking disgusted with whichever of Minaya or Wilpon decided to handle things that way.
On the plus side, seeing Rick "I can fix Victor Zambrano in ten minutes, so let's trade Kazmir for him" Peterson leave will not upset me that much. His supposed calming influence on Maine and Perez has been noticeably absent this year.

How about you fire the pitching coach and hire some relievers to give Wagner the night off every now and again? Nah, let's fire the manager.
