Gregory McDonald has died.

Dammit.

I grew up reading his books, although I freely admit that it was the Chevy Chase movie that first drew them to my attention. I loved the Fletch books, and loved the two Flynn books even more. When I was a teen, I probably consumed as much mystery as sci-fi and fantasy, and Mcdonald was a major reason. I haven't read one of his books in years, but I think I'll have to grab one from the library.

ETA: Wikipedia says that there's a third Flynn book. Who knew?

He lived in my home county and was close friends with my senior English teacher -- she said after her husband died, McDonald saw she'd lost her best friend and stepped in. I missed my chance to meet him because I was on some Beta Club trip. :(

I went pretty much the same path. I loved the Flynn books. But it was always tough to try and hear his voice in my head with the weird accent he described. Wasn't it German with an Irish lilt, or something?
