End-of-week links
Oct. 3rd, 2008 03:07 pm1. The evolution of gmail, with lots of early screenshots.
2. Great question-and-answer session with Suze Ormond on a bunch of topics. Good ones include student loans, the need to remember that what one can afford in monthly rent is not a good indicator for what one can afford to pay as a monthly mortgage, and the need to remember that stocks work best as a long-term investment, with the understanding that "next year" is not long-term. Also, there's a haiku.
3. And here's a great interview with Gary Cole. Not nearly as useful, but still fun. No mention is made of Crusade, for some reason.
4. Robin McKinley has written many wonderful things. But this recipe for honey doughnuts might be my favorite. Or at least the one that makes me the hungriest.
5. Ken Jennings on the short fiction of John Collier.
6. Evan Handler on why being a "bad patient" can be essential to your survival.
7. One more good financial interview, this time with Warren Buffet.
8. Shockingly, both candidates made false claims about taxes last night.
9. The Vulture suggests Ten Oddball Things Your Comics Collection Truly Needs. We've got a few of these.
10. Finally,
copperwise has written a superb essay on "Joe Six-Pack" and "the Average American" (depending on which side of the political aisle your condescending politicians happen to fall). Go read it.

The two most expensive things I've encountered in life are 1) Owning a vehicle, and 2) Owning a home.
