Yes, there will be a completely inconsequential remake of The Host.

Me, I'll stick with the original, which is already a pretty American film in terms of humor, excess, and violence, and really doesn't need to be made again.

You know Hollywood couldn't resist the chance to remake something that is best described as Little Miss Sunshine meets Godzilla. It was inevitable.

I'd be more pissed than bemused if the accursed Day the Earth Stood Still remake weren't imminent.

True. That said, much as I loved Wise's original movie, I could see the justification for a remake there (not a justification for this remake, mind you, but the original was a flawed film from more than forty years ago with a great premise, which is actually the sort of film that should be remade). No way do I see the need for another Host.

Yeah, I agree on both points, though I think you find more flaws in the original Day the Earth Stood Still than I do. Then again, that's how I view the Ocean's 11 remake -- the original (in my estimation, anyway) is a fairly lousy film, giving the remake a lot of room to expand and become a superior film.

If you're going to remake a classic film, take the ball and run far, far away and abandon the title. We'd slaughter a remake of Seven Samurai, but A Bug's Life certainly was the same plot without assuming the remake mantle. Similar thing with Casablanca and Barb Wire; even though the latter film was *ahem* not very good, it certainly didn't stumble under the weight of it's predecessor.

I mean, the Zack Snyder Dawn of the Dead remake would have been okay if it hadn't been named Dawn of the Dead. It was an awesome film when it launched into completely new territory, like that great 20-minute opening sequence, or the whole subplot with the guy in the gun shop. But the rest? Feh.

I just re-watched The Day the Earth Stood Still and I'm having a hard time picture how they'll translate it culturally to this era. There's one scene where Klaatu asks the kid who the best man, the smartest and most respected man in the world is. And the kid points out the scientist who lives down the street. What would happen today? Who would the kid point out?

I wonder about this new propensity for remakes. Did everyone ran out of original ideas at once?
