This is disgusting.

Universities are cutting jobs left and right in this economy, but U of Tennessee is going to spend nearly $10 million to fight music piracy.

I'm more disgusted with Gov. Phil Bredesen and his lawmakers than with the RIAA here. I expect the RIAA to commit disgusting acts, as that's the entire foundation of their existence. Politicians, all snarking aside, are actually supposed to serve the people.

That's pathetic.

Because music piracy is the great scourge of the American dream -- not poverty, lack of food or clothing, homelessness or unemployment. The United Way in this area expects this to be the most "in need" season in years....but for heaven's sake, don't pirate music!

*facepalm*

Don't forget, the RIAA are "people" too, people with very deep pockets when it comes to re-election time, and when some politician needs a vacation or remodelling.

One can only hope they're caught and treated like Sen. Stevens.

[livejournal.com profile] tallin (who used to live in Tennessee) said that this isn't the first time they've done idiotic crap like that: the football team was more important than the library budget in 1996...

oh no, this was the state (or at least local to Nashville public) library system. pro football, not college.
which is, in many ways, even more pathetic.

Well, there's a waste of ten million. Or 100 professors for the university
if the article is correct.

Within one week of installing that monitoring software, someone will find
and circulate a hack for it.

The RIAA is living in the 19th century and is circling the drain.
Which would be fine if they weren't so busy trying to make life
miserable for people who don't agree with their BS.

And causing so many who fall for their propaganda so much money.

Ironically "drm free" is the newest selling point for legal
downloading services. As it should be.

From what i've heard, file sharing can be risky because of malware
but will never be stopped.

As far as listening/watching music/movies online, if i like what i see
and hear, i go out and buy the cd/dvd simply because burnt copies don't stand up
to pressed copies (even with all *their faults*) made by the high tech companies.

It's not U of Tenn, it's all public universities in TN. Which includes mine. It's because of the music industry in Nashville, really.
