What I keep wondering is why nobody brought this up with Buffy! She was 16 when she started dating 200+ year old Angel, wasn't she?
That is not to say, in any way, that Twilight is on the same level as Buffy - but obviously this is an acceptable snark point with twilight, but I don't remember hearing anyone snark the same point in Buffy.
Probably because the characters (at least Buffy and Xander) were very aware of this on Buffy, and (just as importantly), sleeping with an underage girl (albeit one he didn't actually sleep with until she was 17 -- remember, their first night was on her birthday) led directly to some awful consequences for him.
Good point. I was also just thinking that her Slayerness probably had some impact on that, too - we're reminded over and over that she's not, after all, just a teenager.
That is hilarious. My brother's gf has two young daughters (9 & 12) who are crazy about Twilight. My brother told them that he thought it was creepy because here is some really ancient dude hitting on young girls and that the guy is really just an old perv. Apparently that really gave them something to think about.
On another note, my youngest brother commented that he'd rather his daughter (who isn't reading yet) read Laurel K. even with all the sex, than Twilight. He's bother by the "woe is me, I should throw myself off a bridge" type of mentality in Twilight as opposed to the strong female role of Laurel K's heroine.
I've let my daughter read the Guilty Pleasures comics, but I let her know that there is graphic details about sex in later LKH books. Originally, Anita Blake was a very good role model and very similar to me, if slightly more jaded. My daughter stated that if she eventually reads the books, that she will just skip over the sex scenes anyway, to which I replied, "I often do." Granted, I like LKH and am comfortable about sexual content, however I prefer that sex in novels or on film be storyline-driven, and that it's enough to just show a tousle-haired woman clutching a sheet to get the point across that, yes, the people just had sex. If the sex doesn't advance the plot, I generally don't want to see it. Which is why I admire the way that Joss Whedon handles things... show a bit of skin, add a dash of humor, and point out the possible consequences of the characters' actions.
I loved LKH's early books. Later it got to be more about the sex than the story. However I do still read and enjoy them. Her other series just started out that way it's been blood and sex all the way. Heh.
But wasn't the 107 year old vamp basically a kid too, frozen so to speak at 17? i haven't read the books or seen the movie, I just have the movie trailers to go by. :P
Since I started watching "Buffy", I've always wished there was an episode where Angel shows up to take her out for the night, but finds Chris Hansen waiting for him in the kitchen instead.
See? I can prove it! http://poobah103.livejournal.com/307545.html
