Seriously, I honestly don't understand this behavior:

You're in a hotel -- a nice one -- and it's late at night. What, exactly, makes it appropriate for you to talk loudly to your companions, shout down the hallway to them, or let your bratty kids (who should have been in bed hours ago) run amok?

I can figure out lots of explanations for the behavior itself -- drunkenness, being raised by wolves, being an asshole -- but nothing that explains how incredibly prevalent it is.

So, yeah, in a theoretically nice hotel that's being brought to its knees by virtue of having the most annoying collection of guests ever. Exhaustion and annoyance are fighting an ongoing battle.

The lack of consequences?

On behalf of the night clerk working your hotel (and night audit clerks everywhere) I give you permission to beat them with sticks. Provided you do it quietly and in away from cameras so it doesn't lead to paperwork and eye twitching...

It's the same group of ignorant assholes that have made me stay away from movie theaters. Who wants to pay high (and still getting higher) prices to be assaulted by rude adults and their spawn? I'd rather wait for the DVD and watch it at home.

Don't insult wolves, as I'm sure they'd be better behaved if they'd been raised by a pack !

Way I figure it, those yahoos probably were protected from the consequences of their actions when they were kids, and it's a habit of thoughtless entitlement that's continued on into adulthood. Makes them technological savages, as in never been civilised.

A prevailing, general lack of caring for other people.

This started in the 70s and has gotten progressively worse.

Why would the schmucks at Enron do what they did to all those people?

Why would that Madoff guy scam people out of $50 billion?

Why would the mayor of New Orleans tell his citizens that we were on our own in a Category 5 hurricane?

Why would Wall Street use bailout money to pay bonuses?

Why would someone fly a plane into a skyscraper?

Why would Bush invade a country that hadn't made a malevolent move against the US?

Answer: No one gives a shit about other people. This, of course, goes against the teachings of all religious and spiritual beliefs.

The same thing that makes it appropriate for a guest to warm up his diesel Hemi outside my room window at 5am. And of course he has to rev it pretty high to get it warm.

I'm going to say "A wildly misplaced sense of entitlement?". Some people haven't an ounce of fuckin' consideration and think actually parenting their kids is 'stifling'.

They're not at home. As mentioned above, there are no consequences.

Not to be a naywayer here but I was out of town and in a nice hotel, went out with my friend, came back (had a *ahem* few beverages), was walking back to our room talking to her and got yelled at by a fellow guest for being too loud. Honestly? I thought I was talking at a normal tone of voice but perhaps at 3 am nothing sounds normal or I had loud bar/drunk ears. So maybe they didn't mean it.

Speaking of hotels

Do you know anyone that's going to Arisia that needs roommates? Preferably Shomer Shabbos because I have one way of dealing with the electronic locks that wouldn't fly with non-shomer folks, but that's not a deal breaker for me.

And did you see that we're on youtube now?

I only look at it sporadically. It looks cool but I hate to look at myself. Although I must apologize that I'm looking bored when you are talking about the lack of humanity in zombies. I find that very interesting. I don't think I was bored really.
