So, remember last year, when, thanks to an ice storm, I broke my ass on the way to work?

Today was just as bad, but since I didn't break my ass on the steps, I actually had to make the commute.

Every fucking inch of sidewalk was covered in ice. As were much of the streets. Walking from the bus to work took as long as my entire bus ride, and I fell at least five times, as there was literally no place without ice.

Ow.

Nothing broken, at least. Although I was lucky to be next to a huge snow drift for one fall, which otherwise would have at least sprained my wrist.

(Seriously, I don't understand canceling things for snow, which really isn't that bad, but not for ice, which is much, much more dangerous).

I wonder how well a set of metal golf cleats would work in that.

EDIT: Ah, and the snow cancellations. Things are probably different up there, but when TN shuts down for those 1-2" snows it's not really for the snow. We usually have *just* enough residual heat in the roads to melt the first 1/2" of snow before the pavement drops below 32 degrees, leaving a nice impossibly slick surface with a bit of fresh snow on top...

I was wondering about cleats as well. Or even wrapping towels around the shoes, or something ... most shoe soles don't really have terribly good traction.

you want yak traks - they are designed to go over shoes in icy conditions.

Thanks for the warning! I (and my ass) owe you one. My entire front steps and most of the sidewalk to the bus stop were covered in a nigh-invisible layer of superslippery ice.

Wasn't it awful?
I saw two guys fall and it took me 30 minutes to walk to work when it usually takes me ten.
They really need to grit the pavements, not just the roads. It's incredibly dangerous.

It's your own fault for not always having on your person a military-issue flamethrower and quarter sticks of dynamite to clear a path.

You need these
