I have to say, given the numbers they've been reporting, that there's an awful lot of empty space in some of those overhead shots. I figured with nearly 2 million attendees, we wouldn't be able to see any grass at all.
I don't know how accurate the numbers are (who was counting?) but bear in mind how high up the cameras were....to give you a sense of scale, the Washington Monument is over 55 feet wide at the base and over 555 feet tall.
The National Mall is about 200 feet wide (give or take), and the distance from the Washington Monument to the Capitol is about a mile.
