The Hugo nominations are up! And I've actually read four of the five nominees for novel (and borrowed the fifth from the library, although I never did get around to reading it because of a lack of time). I'm not sure I wouldn't have chosen some other books, but I certainly don't dislike any of the books that have been chose. Interesting that 3/5 of the best novel ballot is YA, though.

For the other categories, I haven't read nearly enough of the choices, but I'm happy that Farah Mendlesohn is nominated for Best Related Book, as Rhetorics of Fantasy really is quite wonderful. Ditto Kij Johnson's short story, “26 Monkeys, Also the Abyss”.." And Electric Velocipede, which published [livejournal.com profile] shadesong last fall, is up for Best Fanzine! Yay!

As for the Campbell, the only authors I've read are Durham and Gilman, and of the two, Durham is leagues better. That said, I do intend to track down stories by the other three.

(Note: No, I don't actually vote, since that requires money. But I still enjoy seeing the list of nominations when it's announced, and I use the nominations to track down stories I should read.)

I sometimes think that Zoe's Tale is "YA," because that's how they wanted to market it.

I do not think "Ender's Game" was originally marketed as YA (though I did read an abridged version in and English textbook years ago).
