So, there's a new theatre in town -- the Madstone -- that specializes in indy and alternative flicks. And they're opening this weekend with free movies! You can see the info (and get your pass emailed to you) at http://www.madstonetheaters.com/series_detail.jsp?eventid=1009&eventseriesid=85&cityid=8

I'd really like to see one of the movies on Sunday (partially to check out the theatre, and partially because most of these are movies worth seeing on the big screen). Anyone local want to hit one of the shows on Sunday (maybe Pulp Fiction or Gosford Park)?

You know, I don't even like Sailor Moon, but this sounds like a helluva release. All tv shows that get mangled on TV should get treated this well:

April 17, 2003

ADV Films is set to release the uncut first season of the classic anime series Sailor Moon on July 15, 2003.  This DVD-only release includes all 46 episodes on eight disks.  Each episode will be presented in the original Japanese with English subtitles.  The DVDs come in two 4-disc cases, which are contained in a high quality, foil-stamped, custom art box.  The Season One Collection has a running time of 1060 minutes and a suggested retail price of $149.98.

The new ADV collection will have an age rating of 15+, which should provide some indication of the amount of censorship in the Americanized version of Sailor Moon, which original U.S. rights holder DIC bowdlerized for U.S. TV audiences.  DIC's cuts were far more extensive than just covering up the subtle nudity of transformation scenes.  Six episodes were cut out entirely and two others (#45 and #46) were combined into one.  The original music and opening sequences were redone by DIC, which also censored violence, adolescent romance, and the story's gender-bending and homosexual elements.  The final episode with its unflinching acceptance of death as a necessary possible consequence of a righteous fight was particularly hard hit by DIC's transformation of the series into a U.S. children's release.

So, I went to lunch with co-worker yesterday, and snagged his mayo packs for my cheeseburger. After eating it (sans bun, of course), I was flipping the mayo pack through my hands, and noticed that the ingredient list included "high-fructose corn syrup."

WTF?

Why the hell would mayo have that? And any idea how much could be in the mayo? I'm hoping it was minimal, but I'm just amazed. I know that the sugar in some jars of mayo isn't enough to affect blood sugar, but I know that corn syrup is a lot denser. And since I'd had a salad at lunch, I'd already used up my carbs for the day.

They're below the cut tag. The unofficial name of them is apparantly the "Michael Swanwick" awards.

Neil is up for Coraline, of course. And Enterprise somehow got two nominations for tv episode (Joss got the other three). I'd have liked to see a bone thrown to Special Unit 2 in memorium, just to recognize the good UPN sci-fi show that was cancelled. Ah, well.

I'd love to see Minority Report pull the upset movie win. Or Spirited Away.

Anyway, just follow the cut tag for the nominees:

So, first, I wanna thank three more gift-givers.

[livejournal.com profile] morenasangre and [livejournal.com profile] farren got me Games Workshop gift certificates!

And [livejournal.com profile] jet_li_wannabe got me a virtual gift certificate (he'll treat me to stuff at a gaming store)!

So I'm floating in potential free gaming stuff! Woohoo! And thanks to all three of you!

And now a question:

I was sorting through my wishlist, and it looks like two of you bought me subscriptions to Games Magazine (or one of you bought me two subscriptions). I'm damned grateful, but I'd love to know who did it (feel free to email me if you don't want to publicly admit it).

A few days ago, Elayna, instead of picking a tv show or a Disney DVD to watch, decided to check out the Beany and Cecil special edition DVD I've had for years (but which was on her shelf, of course). She's spent the last three days watching every episode of the show (including the ones that had been lost since the '50s). I'm so damned proud of her.

Now that she can appreciate Clampett, the next job is getting her hooked on Jay Ward.
