Weekend was busy (too busy for silly things like articles), with all sorts of freshman weekend fun like wireless outages. Fortunately, parents and incoming students alike were friendly and patient, making for a mostly painless experience. Even more fortunately, the percentage of incoming students with Macs, a number that had hovered around 10% for years, hopped to about 35% or so. It's a lot easier to troubleshoot problems on machines that don't, y'know, suck. Not to mention the fact that there were simply fewer problems.

Yesterday was somewhat busy. Today is kicking my ass (both because of all the stuff hitting the fan and because of the sixteen days without a true day off so far). I'm forcing myself to take a few minutes to breathe here, so some random thoughts:

1. I'm happy with the results of the Hugos, as Spin was my favorite of the three nominated novels I read (see my too-short thoughts on the novel here). Connie Willis always deserves awards, as well, so go her! And John Scalzi winning the Campbell award (which, as Ahnold would note, is Not a Hugo!) is certainly a good thing.

2. I am disappointed to hear (based on what I read here and here) that Harlan Ellison, who is capable of being an incredibly nice person, was acting like The Shithead on the Edge of Forever. I'm still hoping that this somehow turns out to be an incredibly out-of-hand example of Internet Rumors Gone Wild, but there are way too many reliable first-hand sources here.

3. Hey! Just Imagine Watchmen as Created by Stan Lee! This had me giggling way too much.

4. My Kingdom of Loathing Hardcore experience is going along okay. I'm at level 7, but I've only finished quests through level three. I did crank the MPD up to 4 for the Boss Bat, so I've got the britches. I've farmed my digital key, my red pixel potions, my enchanted bean, and my first Daily Dungeon Key (also snagged a skeleton key en route), and I've also done my five shore trips. Going hardcore around this time was definitely the way to go -- I barely have enough time for the game even this way.

5. The final two episodes of Deadwood and the first two of the new season of Prison Break: Holy shit! There was a lot there that I just didn't see coming.

6. Combine one lame-ass remake of the best Genesis song of the Phil Collins lead singer era with Todd McFarlane putting in his usual half-assed efforts and ripping off his own "Do the Evolution Video," and you get a big pile of suck.

7. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] gaelfling, I now have Coffee Crisps! Hooray!

8. I have, as always, lots more to say, and all too little time to put together coherent thoughts. If I have my way, it's entirely possible, however, that you'll see a multiple-paragraph post on a topic some time this week. What a concept! In the meantime, I'm diving back into the Pit of Despair and promptly ignoring LJ and the the rest of the web for the next few hours.

Seriously.
