Sigh

So I just read this awesome piece by Jenn Frank: I was a Teenage Sexist. It's one of those awesome, everyone-should-read-this bits (please do so!), and I in fact discovered it from Patrick Klepick's latest Worth Reading at Giant Bomb (incidentally, GiantBombcast is one of four video game podcasts I listen to, and is worth your time if you're a gamer and have serious amounts of time each week to listen to podcasts - each weekly episode clocks in at around three hours.)

What's making me sigh, of course, are the comments. I do love this one in response to one of the first less-than-well-reasoned responses. But it's ones like the one by "LordCmdrStryker" on page two of the Giant Bomb post (they don't do direct comment linking, alas) that just make long for the ability to issue Milgram-style electric shocks, but without the fake devices.

Intellectually, I just need to accept that it's not worth reading the slew of idiotic comments on any of the sites I enjoy that actually attempt to take a non-dismissive approach to pop-culture relationship to reality. Yes, there are intelligent people commenting at Kotaku, Giant Bomb, Unwinnable, Newsarama, and other sites, but other than a place like Border House that very actively creates a safe space, it's not worth dealing with the idiots.

(Aside: Don't get me started on Reddit.)
