I Twittered briefly about this earlier this week, but we watched the pilot of Ryan Murphy's new series Glee, and it lived up to its name.

It's basically a rework of Murphy's Popular -- complete with the football star/singer issue -- although I suspect it'll go less into the surreal (no all-mullet episodes, for example). And it's got Jane Lynch and Jayma Mays, which is usually enough to get me to watch anything (aside from Mays, it also features Jessalyn Gilsig and, in the pilot, Stephen Tobolowsky, so there's lots of familiar faces to Heroes fans). It's funny, sweet, occasionally dark, and quirky without every letting the quirks ruin the actual show.

All three of us are pretty much hooked.

And yes, it's got a pair of actors who are way past the drinking age playing the primary teens. But I can let that one slide. It's good enough to be worth it.

If you're in the US, go catch the pilot on Hulu.

If you're elsewhere, here's the final three minutes and change of the episode, featuring a wonderful Journey cover (at least, here it is until the Fox Lawyers catch wind of it):

For certain definitions of "wonderful" that include "violently emetic".

Ok, I was completely turned off on this by the ads that have been running for it... but man... that was fantastic. That and some very positive reviews by friends mean I'll probably give the show a chance now.

Yeah - I was pretty much hooked by the time the Journey cover came on...and then that came on and I mentioned to [livejournal.com profile] slipjig that it was absolutely going in my queue. :D

I loved Popular with all my heart, and I was so happy when I found out that Glee was by the same guy! That Journey cover gives me chills. I feel like a dork for saying it, but its true. In case you didn't know- the creator did a Q&A with TWoP, and he mentioned that every few months they'd be putting out a cd with the songs on it. I will buy (or download, shh!) every single one.

The All-Mullet episode of Popular was one of the Greatest Moments of Television EVER...

Can't speak for or against the show, but I'm a tad miffed that they ripped off the Journey arrangement from Petra Haden (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kXbHf1SwGk).

I'm definitely excited about Glee. Loved the premier episode and I'm hoping it makes it through its trial run in the fall.

whee, an expensive tv show with professional lights, sound, costume. choreography, actors, singers, dancers, and that manages to portray a well done highschool music act. Color me unimpressed.

And the fact that they use an actor who can walk in the part of a paraplegic that's an obvious emotional manipulation? Double suck.

What the hell yendi, have you gone hormonal on us?
