Everyone who reads and/or writes books should read this post. Everyone else is likely not reading this post, anyway.

Key quote:

It's a pretty simple equation, really. Limited lifespan divided by number of books it's possible to consume due to vagaries of money and mortality equals I am not buying your books if you behave like a fuckmuppet in public.

But read the whole thing.

I haven't read the post yet, but I must say, I like the term 'fuckmuppet.'

My very first thought about all of this was that I might just have a new favourite word...

that was fantastic.

Its amazing to me how many people who depend upon the admiration of masses of others will unthinkingly start swathing others with the hatebrush. I'm always like "uh, dude? You do realize there's probably people who USED to like you [read:fork over their hard-earned money to you] who either know and love someone you just metaphorically tarred and feathered or they ARE that someone"

But alas, writing a good line doesn't prevent someone from being a total idjit who buys their own hype long enough to forget that even their dedicated fans may sometimes have thoughts differing from their own.

and I'm actually an old fogey (43 next month) who socializes quite a bit so I end up knowing quite a lot of people through other people.

Does Harlan Ellison behaving like fuckmuppet in public get some sort of exemption because he writes mostly short stories? Because no matter what a turd he is to people in person, many of his stories are still golden.

Well, I'm off him.

Life is short, and the amount of writing I would like to read is long. I can give Ellison a miss.

That's a shame, because in spite of his personal relationship to the world outside his skull, he's still probably the most prolific and profound short story author I've ever read. And I don't just say that because I read "Deathbird" when I was an angsty teenager, either.
