Seriously?
Aug. 25th, 2009 08:13 amSo the reason Billy Wagner rejected the trade to the Sox was because he was concerned about his health?\
Seriously?
The Mets open-day shortstop, third baseman, center fielder, and first baseman (every one of them a multiple-time All Star) are out for the season. The guy they traded their opening-day right fielder (who spent a chunk of time on the DL himself) for is day-to-day and likely headed towards the DL. Their backup shortstop and the backup to the backup shortstop are both out for the season. The rookie outfielder they called up is done for the season. Their #2 starter is out for the season. So is the replacement they called up for him. And so is the replacement they called up for him. Their #3 starter spent sixty days on the DL (but in fairness, he stinks so much, injuries are probably a good thing for him). The #1 starter is day-to-day with an injury. And the setup man has missed half the season as well.
And those are just the big injuries (I won't mention the ones to Luis Castillo or Angel Pagan, as they're at least in the starting lineup right now, and they actually comprise about 95% of the Mets offense).
I can't think of a place where Wagner would be more likely to get hurt than in NYC.
Note that I still like Wagner, and I'd love to have him on the team next year, so I'm not complaining. But still, that doesn't seem like a good reason.
