Yet another completely unnecessary remake

Talentless and ludicrously overrated director Rob Zombie is remaking The Blob.

Now, the original Blob -- Steve McQueen aside -- was a flawed piece of cheese, and begged for a remake.

But it got a near-perfect one in 1988, with Shawnee Smith and Kevin Dillon, as well as a great supporting bit by Del Close. Some nice twists on the tropes, a solid cast, and good B-movie directing by Chuck Russell. It not only doesn't need to be remade, it especially doesn't need to remade by the guy who made the piece of shit known as the Halloween remake.

The new Halloweens were actually steps up from the common horror movies running around today; giving motivation to the villain, taking time to lay out a decent story, and scaring people shitless when the blood actually starts running.

I call bullshit on your bullshit. The new Halloween (haven't seen the second) was a piece of crap, and while it was better than, say, the Friday the 13th remake, it certainly didn't tower even over mainstream US horror, let alone indie and foreign stuff. And giving motivation is an incredible way to actually undercut horror, not increase it -- see the original Halloween for an example of doing it right. As for a "decent story," there wasn't an unpredictable moment in the entire movie, nor anything that scanned as either original or scary (not counting jump scares, which are cheap).

I dunno, I'm a huge fan of the original (as everyone should be) and I enjoyed the remake, mostly on accident. When compared to the original, the remake suffers in every way, but looked at completely on its own... I dunno. I think it was better than most of the Final Destinations and Saws and crappy -- er, crappier -- remakes out there today.

But even putting aside Halloween, I've still enjoyed one Rob Zombie film (The Devil's Rejects.) That's more than I can say for the above-mentioned Eli Roth.

TDR was certainly the best of the three of his films I've seen (and was enough of an improvement over his first movie that I'd actually had hope for Halloween). But although I agree that his Halloween was better than the Saws, I actually enjoyed all three of the FD films I've seen more (although #3 is more a guilty pleasure). I was also surprised to find that I enjoyed the MBV remake more, as well.

But yeah, it's much harder to judge a Halloween remake than a MVD/F13/Prom Night one, given the quality of the original.

Is Zombie actually overrated? Which is to say, is he actually rated at all? I thought he was just overhyped.

Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference, but he was hailed as a massively original voice after the massively unoriginal and uninspired House of 1000 Corpses. As best as I can recall, the people making those claims were horror fans and indie sites, not his publicity machine.

And I need to see that Blob remake. It's a hole in my Frank Darabont experience. (I have seen "The Woman in the Room," though, so I have that going for me.)

I wish. One of Zombie's biggest weaknesses as a director is his inability to recognize the fact that his wife is about as bad an actress as the world has seen. Instead of putting her in roles appropriate for that range, he insists on giving her roles that require range.
