Cell phones are so often the first victims in horror movies, getting no signal, soaked, smashed, or otherwise taken out of the picture to prevent the assorted victims from finding help (although in many cases, the local police also present a danger, and in at least one film here, the cell phone's lack of signal takes place in a dream or imaginary world). X-Files used to do this a lot. Of course, it was more credible in the mid-90s. Or inside my house.

Yeah, in the '90s, the bigger problem was how often and well cell phones worked in comparison to real life. Now, things are pretty much reversed.
