So, on top of everything else, we got a phone call at 6AM today from the school; there'd been a written threat (most likely from an idiotic teen) in a school bathroom, and they were searching lockers, opening late, and not allowing backpacks today.

So, yeah. Miss Kid's at school lugging her binders around with her, and having to deal with her locker for the first time in ages.

Aside from that, we're approaching a return to normal (or whatever passes for it around our house). She'll have her new glasses tonight, she'll be caught up on work by the end of the weekend, and she'll have the staples out next week. We'll keep an eye on her for new pain (her neck's hurting a bit), but she's clearly aching to get back into her routines.

As for us, we're finally starting to breathe a bit.

Thanks to everyone for the well-wishes; apologies for not responding to them individually; we're just a little drained right now. We read and appreciated all of them.

Oh, and for those who missed it, here's the local media coverage.

How in the crap are people arguing over that, on the newspage? Thankfully, most of them seem to realize that she waited for the walk signal and it was the driver's fault for not stopping. Still... wow.

Newspapers don't know how to manage comment threads, as far as I can tell; they're still used to "it doesn't matter except for the 3 letters we actually published" and don't think about how it looks for every story to have 50 comments on it, 30 of which are from people who didn't read the story, want to blame their particular bĂȘte noire (often taking the "noire" part a bit too literally, blaming Barack Obama and/or Deval Patrick), or are just completely incapable of using the English language.

I was reading those comments and thinking how tame it was in comparison with the forums on the paper down here (www.mcall.com).

Within the first dozen posts, someone's got to be blaming Obama, and/or accusing at least one of the parties involved of being an illegal immigrant and/or trailer trash and/or redneck and/or blaming a certain local lawyer for causing all the problems. In the rare case none of those factors can be misapplied (or, worse, accurately applied), they will blame the Morning Call for printing a story that is clearly there just to boost readership...

I'm surprised the paper didn't print the driver's name ~ at that age, if he's been a long-time Watertown resident, I'd likely recognize the name; hell, if he's got kids, I probably went to school with them.

The traffic in that area really hasn't changed all that much since I first walked through there to school as a kindergartner three and a half decades ago.

Well, that's not entirely true. I think they put the light up sometime in the late seventies or early eighties. I'm pretty sure I remember a time when there was no crossing light, but they might have just upgraded it.
