At the Sci-Fi TV Year in Review panel at Arisia last week, the moderator gave a shout-out to Chuck and Big Bang Theory as shows clearly made by and for sci-fi fans/geeks that weren't genre. When I suggested that Leverage belonged in this category too, he scoffed.

(We'll ignore the fact that Chuck actually is a full-fledged sci-fi show, of course.)

So, we just watched this week's episode of Leverage. Surely I'm not the only one who noticed that the basketball players mentioned on TV were named Sisko and Archer, right?

Yeah, I stand by my claim.

I've said before, and will say it again -- Leverage should be named a Honorary Genre Show. If nothing else, Hardison's tech pushes the edge of what's possible in ways that do a better job of illuminating modern interactions with technology than a LOT of more traditional SciFi does that's on the screen today.

And yes, the shout-outs are many and plentiful, and FUN. And I'm unaware of any show that's managed to hire as many STAR TREK cast members in so few episodes. I personally want LeVar Burton to show up as Hardison's long-last Dad...

Hey! Maybe we can have a "LEVERAGE and the Edge of Speculative Fiction" Panel for next year?

I haven't watched Leverage yet, but I'll give that a try.

I always giggle when I see that Roxann Dawson is directing a random episode of a show I watch. :D

Did you see the Wil Wheaton episode? Or the one where Hardison waxes rhapsodic on the topic of World Of Warcraft?

John Rogers' blog is a great source of all things Behind The Scenes At Leverage. The interesting bits, if you look back far enough, are things like how Wil Wheaton was giving him a hard time back in Season 1, and Rogers said "Oh, yeah? You're TOTALLY showing up if there's a Season 2".

Apparently Frakes, Spiner, and Wheaton are conspiring to get Burton and Stewart to appear in Season 3.

how could anybody ever watch a single episode of Leverage and not see it is obviously a geek show? If nothing else, they had Wil Wheaton playing a hacker criminal mastermind, and if that isn't geek fanservice, nothing is. Wasn't it one of the earliest episodes where Hardison gave them aliases like Sara Jane Baker and Sylvester McCoy? That's not even noticeable, let alone funny, if you aren't a hard-core geek.
