Taylor Swift and Def Leppard, performing "Pour Some Sugar on Me." Sadly, although Taylor looks like she's having a blast, she simply doesn't have the vocal chops to really rock out. Link ganked from [livejournal.com profile] allah_sulu:

It's interesting during the crescendo parts, Joe Elliott is rocking and Taylor Swift goes into this country mode. I never really noticed that kind of difference between the two styles of music before.

Def Leppard really should get a fiddler player, though.

It's not so much a "country mode" as a "lack of effort" mode. I noticed it in one of Swift's own tunes, in a live video, and I was trying to figure out how she was getting all the cheers by what sounded like a phoned in performance. It's almost like she's speaking (kind of) melodically as opposed to singing.

Shania Twain already proved that the only difference between (some flavors of) rock and (some flavors of) country is, well nothing. She was doing the female-fronted Def Leppard thing since her second album. I think her first one has more of a traditional thing going, but I've never heard more than a song or two from it, so I could be wrong.

The fiddle player in this seems, energy-wise, to fit in better with Leppard than Swift.

On another note, there's probably less than a thousand people in this world that have heard me play guitar, and one of them is in that video. =)

But during those times, didn't she sound her twangiest? It was like she was putting the energy into a kind of vibration instead of launching it straight up.

I'll have to check out some Shania Twain then.

So, don't leave me in suspense, who is it?!?

I don't know if twang is an element of determining country vs. rock. Witness the twang of Ozzy Osbourne/Black Label Society/Pride n' Glory guitarist and New Jersey native son Zakk Wylde (Warning: lyrics NSFW in most places, and on top of that, it has a banjo and those aren't safe anywhere):

Besides, like Zakk's, Twain's twang isn't twue... she's Canadian, eh.

As for the suspense, it was guitarist Vivian Campbell. It was at the Winter 1988 NAMM trade show, and he was still in Whitesnake. Viv played a guitar built by a custom builder, and I was trying one out, playing some of my own music. As I was playing one riff in particular I had my head down and when I looked up, Viv was standing there nodding his head, saying "cool!"

It was a pretty cool riff. =)

I would call that country although it's under a rock label.

That is so cool!

You know what ruins this for me, aside from her vocals? (And I live in a house where the Fearless cd has been played 1,000,000,000,000,000 times IN A ROW0 is that I find myself wondering if she'd even been born when this song was released.

No.

Song was released in '87; Swift was born in '89.

Poor kid. I enjoyed the videos for a few of her songs, and I'm pleased that she can write them herself, songs of a teenager or no. But yeah, that's my karaoke performance with a little more accuracy. No projection, no rawr. I could only take about twenty seconds of it.

I had to turn it off. It was for to ow upon on my head, for many many reasons. One reason was the ridiculous hair flipping.
