So much for the claims that it's purely a consumption device.

(Disclaimer: No, iPad-created art isn't necessarily comparable to oil-based art or art created on a more powerful computer. I'm just happy to see the tablet being used for more than just media consumption.)

My spouse found this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OLP4nbAVA4) last week showing the process of painting on an iPad.

I said to [livejournal.com profile] mgrasso when this came out that I'll be amazed if there's no way to use it as a graphics tablet considering the huge hard-on the design industry has for Mac products.
I'd actually be really excited to use one, especially if it was pressure-sensitive enough to use various real styluses and brushes directly on the screen, rather than selecting a 'virtual' texture brush.

Pogo Design is working on pressure sensitivity code - there's video floating around. It makes me sad that pressure sensitivity wasn't implemented out of the gate, or likely to show up in iOS 4.

It sounds like what you want is a Cintiq, though.

While I appreciate that the iPad is great for making art, for typing I found it sucktacular. So artist-me thinks, "Great," but writer-me thinks, "Um, no."

Pardon my less than stellar language, there. -_-

This is one of those mileage-may-vary situations, I guess. One of the reasons an iPad is a priority device for me is that it's the first in a long time I can type on without pain and in comfort.

I know, but I would probably never do that. It's inconvenient to tow a tablet around along with a (probably awkwardly shaped) keyboard when I could just take a laptop. Laptops these days are seriously portable, so if I were in the market right now to buy a new portable device knowing I'd be doing a lot of typing on it, it wouldn't occur to me to buy something like an iPad.

I'm not saying you can't make stuff on an iPad, or can't jury-rig it to make things if its natural interface is awkward, I'm just saying that it doesn't make it easy for some kinds of things, and for a lot of us 'lack of convenience' = 'I won't bother.'

I use the Colors app (Nintendo DS remix) on my iPod to sketch and paint....although nothing serious, because I have my regular computer and tablet for that.

I wrote a sample chapter for a novel I'm pitching on mine.
