I'm generally one to defend Detroit -- I think it's a city with a lot more than it's given credit for, and it seems to take abuse constantly (and I won't deny that I laughed at the "send him to Detroit" line in Kentucky Fried Movie). I love the fact that Detroit 187 shows so much of the joy that exists in the city (even though it would be so easy to just focus on the murders), I love that Chevy commercial, and hate some of the ignorant bs I read about the place.
That said, I truly am disappointed to see that the mayor is rejecting the opportunity to honor one of the city's great heroes. Next year will be the 25th anniversary of the debut of Alex Murphy, and it would be a great time to honor him.
