46% of likely Republican voters in Mississippi say that interracial marriage should be illegal. And another 14% don't know, which is only slightly less moronic.

The link (which is a pdf, btw) shows the exact phrasing of the question. It was unambiguous.

I'm torn between forehead-slapping disbelief and white hot "how the hell do these people even exist anymore?" rage.

Well, if it makes you feel any better, I believe that recent surveys have concluded that Mississippi is the stupidest state in the nation.

(Also the most obese, but I'd like to think that doesn't apply to the poll.)

I don't know. Have you seen the idiots my fellow Floridians are electing? The governor looks like a cross between Lord Voldemort and Fire Marshall Bill, with the evil of the former and the IQ of the latter.

I think West Virginia is still the stupidest state in the US. Arkansas is second-stupidest, and Mississippi is third-most-stupider.

I don't have the spoons to deal with this today.

Fucking hell.

I wonder if it wasn't people just not listening to the question, and some significant percentage of the poll respondents heard "marriage," and figured that they were talking about gay marriage.

I mean, "interracial" and "same-sex" don't sound very much the same, but, well, I could see people just paying that little attention.

This cross-tab confuses me:

Are they saying that of likely Republican voters in Mississppi that describe themselves as "somewhat liberal", 71% of them think interracial marriage should be illegal? What do they think liberal means? Even a greater percentage of the "very liberal" think it should be illegal compared to the other more conservative categories.

D'oh! Just realized I named that picture agevsinterracialmarriage. Although that one is quite enlightening, too. The Millenials and the Boomers(+) are the ones most likely to be moronic.

They said they didn't just pull Republican voters.

"PPP surveyed 400 usual Mississippi Republican primary voters"

I just don't understand how someone who describes himself as liberal, Republican or not, is more likely to think that interracial marriage should be illegal.

I want to move to some civilized country. Even living in California or Massachusetts isn't good enough, since both are still technically US states. I hate it here. I really do. The whole thing is just humiliating, and, frankly, terrifying.

Huh. That state also showed the greatest increase in people who identified as "multi-racial" in the last census.

Soo... would multi-racial people not get to marry, or have to find someone who matched all their options.

Since race is self-identified on government forms, it would be ridiculous to try to enforce. If I want to marry a "Pacific Islander", hey look, I'm "Pacific Islander" now!
